Laramie, Wyoming. On a cold October night in 1998, university student Matthew Shepard was beaten, tortured, bound to a fence and left to die. The murder was shocking for its brutality and even more so because Matthew was targeted simply for being gay. A few weeks after Matthew’s death, members of the Tectonic Theatre Project travelled to Laramie and interviewed over 200 of its residents about the murder and its aftermath. The result: The Laramie Project, a ground-breaking stage play that has since been performed worldwide to universal acclaim, and has inspired a dialogue about the difference between tolerance and acceptance.
